Dr. Paul M. Cooley - Senior Associate
Paul is an interdisciplinary scientist committed to innovation and effective decision making. Paul holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Manitoba with diverse experience in land, water, and ice projects in sub-tropical, temperate, and sub-artic environments. Paul’s scientific roots stemmed from ecology into geography and technology. Paul is exceptionally adept at the design and implementation of technology solutions to monitor and solve scientific problems in diverse landscapes over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Paul is expert at radar/optical remote sensing and uses GIS as a modelling tool.
Paul’s strong capacity for innovation and leadership spurred an evolving career path. Leadership began during his undergrad as a crew chief in remote settings in Ontario. Paul developed a novel habitat mapping method at the Experimental Lakes Area, then looked for a faculty to take on his Master’s data. Paul was invited to a Ph.D. in Malawi funded by CIDA/WWF. In the private sector, Paul worked with the World Bank, Canada Center for Inland Waters, and enjoyed more than a decade leading and authoring sections of major hydroelectric environmental impact assessments. Paul served as an adjunct professor at the Center for Earth Observation Science, U of M.
Paul is the President of NextGen Environmental Research Inc., an R&D firm that specializes in remote sensing of land, water and ice environments. Paul was awarded data grants from NASA and funding from the Canadian Space Agency. Paul brings enthusiasm, innovation, science, and technical prowess to SCC’s portfolio.
